The Famous Faces Of Wilmslow
Despite being a small town of around 25,000 residents, Wilmslow is a popular, thriving parish in Cheshire. What’s more, this bustling centre, part of the Golden Triangle with Alderley Edge and Prestbury, has been home to many famous faces over the years.
Here are some of the well-known celebrities who have grown up or lived in the North West town:
The Lindow Man – Perhaps one of Wilmslow’s oldest known residents is the Lindow Man. He was found in Lindow Moss, preserved in the peat bogs for over 2,000 years. The Lindow Man was a critical find for historians as his discovery helped to shed light on Iron Age history in the local area. Residents of the area may know this Iron Age discovery best as ‘Lindow Pete’ as he is affectionately known.
Alan Turing – Best known for his Enigma code-breaking skills in World War Two at Bletchley Park, Turing was a pioneer in computer science and is celebrated on the Bank of England’s £50 note. Alan Turing lived in Wilmslow for some time. The house he resided in on Adlington Road now has a blue plaque in his honour.
Footballers – Many people in Wilmslow will regularly spot a footballer or two in town. While many footballers try to keep their location private, some footballers have confirmed their Wilmslow residency. Famous footballing faces in Wilmslow include Len Butt, who was born in the town, as was Danny Whitaker and Terry Nicholl. Sir Alex Ferguson lived in Wilmslow for a period, as did Rio Ferdinand and Ji-sung Park.
The 1975 – Popular indie-rock band best known for their hit single, Chocolate, were formed in 2002 at Wilmslow High School. They have won multiple awards, including Brit awards for Best British Group in 2017 and 2019, as well as Best British Album of the Year in 2019. They are also Ivor Novello award winners too.
Another band to have formed at Wilmslow High School is Doves, who credit Wilmslow for inspiring several of their songs. Some of their most famous songs include There Goes The Fear, Black and White Town and Kingdom of Rust.
William Roache and Simon Gregson – Fans of long-running soap, Coronation Street, may see characters Ken Barlow and Steve McDonald in Wilmslow as both actors are well-known residents of the area.
