LPG central heating system: How does it work?
An LPG heating system is one where the boiler that is powered by LPG heats water that is then pumped to radiators around the property and to hot water taps.
It should be noted that some of the gas main type boilers on the market have the capability of being converted so they can be powered by an LPG source.
The cost of LPG for an average home
We have not put a specific value here in the article as the annual cost would depend on the cost of LPG at the time. However, to aid you in your assessment the average power usage for a home in the UK is 12,000 kWh of gas used in a year.
The above figure is of course only a rough guide as there are a number of factors that will impact the level of fuel usage and therefore your fuel bill. Some examples of these factors are:
- The build of your property
- The level of insulation
- How efficient is the boiler and radiator system you intend to use?
- Your location in the U.K. for the like of delivery charges
The Positives of an LPG Heating System
The good news is that LPG is a very efficient type of fuel. This should mean you obtain an excellent return on each of the units of energy you use.
On the topic of efficiency if you have an old existing LPG boiler make sure you read the bullet point below.
- The most modern boilers of the condensing type now make use of the very hot flue gas that used to be wasted. The impact of this is that these types of boiler can get an efficiency level that is 90% or greater
In light of the above it is worth knowing that taking out an old ‘standard type’ LPG boiler and putting in one of a super-efficient modern condensing type is quite a straightforward activity. This is something our friendly staff at ‘Add Heat’ can guide you on.
If you do decide to go down this path however, we would recommend you understand which brands of boilers are the most reliable to save you cost in the long run. In addition, it is also wise when doing this to review your heating controls as this can make best use of a new system.
The negatives of an LPG Heating System
You should be aware that the price of LPG in comparison to heating oil or mains gas has tended to be higher in recent times. However, to give you some confidence in the pricing of LPG:
- The office of fair trading a few years ago looked into LPG pricing and took the view it did not need to be regulated on price
- The LPG is delivered by a tanker so if you need more it is not instantly there
- It should be noted that some systems have the capability to be aware of the level in the tank and put in an order for more to your supplier when they are running low
- The tanker needs to be able to get close enough to your property to perform the delivery
- The delivery driver needs to be able to get the delivery hose from the tanker to the tank location
- The storage tank for the gas is not exactly pretty. It is possible to have an underground tank but there are a number of rules around this. If you are considering an under-ground tank speak to one of our friendly ‘Add Heat’ engineers to understand the regulations
- You need to factor in the cost of your storage tank if you don’t already have one. This could be the purchase cost or rental charge
- LPG is a fossil fuel and is not therefore a clean energy source
