What’s On In Wilmslow: The Wilmslow Show And Scarecrow Festival

Held for over 100 years, The Wilmslow Show is the highlight of the year for Wilmslow. The one-day festival takes place in summer at Wilmslow High School and is filled with a range of events, stalls and things to do.

The History Of The Wilmslow Show

The show has a long-running history. While no one quite knows the date of the first-ever show, there are records containing the show schedule from 1897. With this in mind, there have been at least 100 shows.

In 1897, the show was a big event for society and was considered a highlight of the season. The show in those days was advertised as the largest one-day show and focused mainly on horticulture.

After the First World War, the show resumed, although it was known as Alderley Edge and Wilmslow Horticultural and Rose Society. The show was halted again during World War Two but resumed throughout the 40s, 50s and 60s. Again, throughout this time, the show centred on horticulture and the gardens in the region.

What’s On At The Wilmslow Show

Nowadays, the Wilmslow Show offers more than just horticulture, and there is a full line-up of events.  Families can enjoy fairground fun with plenty of rides as well as games such as crazy golf, sumo suits, garden games and bikes.

Guests can also enjoy a range of exhibits such as the Dog Show, Car Show and Art Show. If you’re a budding baker, you can enter some of the competitions in the cookery tents with lots of prize classes for cooking and baking.

As well as bands to listen to, displays to view and marquees to peruse, there are also plenty of market stalls, food halls and bars to help you enjoy a full day out.

Wilmslow Scarecrow Show

Another popular event in the Wilmslow calendar is the Wilmslow Scarecrow Festival, a fundraising event to help support local charities. Held once a year, residents of Wilmslow can create and enter their scarecrow into the show.

Each year, Scarecrow hunters can seek out a range of scarecrows, with many creative, well-known and often topical themed scarecrows to make the whole family laugh.

All the scarecrows are judged by a panel with the opportunity to win one of the Scarecrow cups. There are prizes for individuals, groups & organisations and schools for their entries.
